History

At Bignold Primary School our History Curriculum is based on the CUSP Curriculum. Mr Thomas is our History Subject Leader.

History is the study of the past - learning about people, places, events and changes.

CUSP History builds on what students have already learned. For example, in EYFS, children explore the past and present through activities, books, visitors, and personal experiences. These early lessons help them understand new concepts in Key Stage 1.

The curriculum is designed to help students build knowledge over time, focusing on chronology, cause and effect, and making connections across different historical periods.

CUSP History ensures that knowledge is remembered and not just learned in the moment. Techniques like spaced retrieval practice and deliberate tasks help students retain and apply what they’ve learned. By connecting new content with prior knowledge, the curriculum reduces the load on students' working memory and helps them link key events, people, and places across history.

Each module revisits and builds on important historical ideas, helping students become more expert and develop a clear, coherent understanding of history.

CUSP History goes beyond the National Curriculum, using evidence-based methods to support students in reaching their full learning potential.
